Product Description

In February 1941 the SS Politician left Liverpool bound for Jamaica. On board she had £3,000,000 of Jamaican currency and 264,000 battles of whisky. The whisky came from a bonded warehouse which had been bombed and the owners sold the contents and they were being shipped to the new owner.

The ship went off course in foul weather and ended up running aground at Ru Melvich, Eriskay. There were several attempts to refloat her before HM Customs ordered her to be blown up (spoilsports!). But not before the locals had availed themselves of much of the cargo. Quite how much was never discovered.

The coin being offered here was salvaged from the wreck and is offered with a C.O.A and a full history of the wreck. The coin was on board at the time and was obtained from the family of a crew member on board at the time of the wreck

The whole episode was made famous in the 1949 classic film “Whisky Galore” starring Basil Radford, Bruce Seton and Joan Greenwood. It was based on the 1947 novel “Whisky Galore” by Angus McPhail.
