Probably the oddest thing you will see today! Click pic for the history.
He’s been with me since Day 1 of my antiques ‘journey’ (don’t you just hate that word!). I bought him at Diss Auction when I saw him tied up in the corner of the room looking sad and forlorn. Little did i realise that was his only expression. He was listed as ‘Polynesian Totem Pole’
I took him home, all six foot of him, and he was immediately banned from the house! I took pictures and sent them off to Norwich Castle Museum. They replied that they had no idea what he was. They sent the pics to The British Museum who were equally perplexed and suggested Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. They were sure to know. But they didn’t and sent the pics to a museum in USA. Again they had no idea but suggested an Indiana Jones type who lived in Yorkshire. He studied the pics and pronounced that it was not Polynesian, but East African. Dated from early 19thC and probably decorated a Chief’s hut. It’s made of hollowed out coconut and is blooming heavy!Enquire
